There are things given to us by destiny, and they do not depend on our will: it is impossible to choose parents, birthplace, in-born qualities and traits of character or talents. However, life has many things that are based on our choice, including first and foremost the Cause, which is challenging, motivating and rewarding. You cannot be happy unless you find and follow your vocation, your Alma Mater, which will transform the boring daily routines into inspiration, exciting Creativity, and burning enthusiasm.
Every year sees hundreds of school-leavers apply for admission to Sakhalin State University. Various reasons bring them to the admission committee, from the ambitious urge to follow their vocation, from youthful romanticism and excitement, to prosaic mercantile considerations dictated by a realistic and reasonable approach to the choice of their Cause. Whatever the reason might be, every young adult seeks from the University assistance in having his or her ambitions come true.
Not only does the University provide education and training opportunities for young people, but also largely determines the cultural and scientific development of the Sakhalin Region.
Sakhalin State University is directly or indirectly involved in the life and destiny of nearly every resident of the region. Throughout half a century since the University's establishment, it has become the alma mater for hundreds of professionals, including teachers, researchers, writers, and journalists.
The University has sufficient reasons to be proud of, among them its remarkably talented staff, including lecturers of highest academic degrees; development
of international cooperation; and productive scientific research; and introduction of new fields of study. But our most valuable treasure is our students, since whatever is done by the University is done for them and for their success.
Wherever you may work after graduation, be it in business, science, culture or education, success may always attend you and let every day be filled with your favourite Cause to which you can devote your entire life without any hesitation.
But becoming a true professional is not the final stage of personal development: one needs to foster spiritual nobleness and sympathy, and learn to be considerate and compassionate. In other words, to be a truly well-educated and humane Citizen and Patriot.
It is you, the youth, who are going to live, work and love in the XXIst century, the century of new technologies and discoveries. It is you that the future of our native island and our great nation depends on.
